COPE rejects gifts from developers and big business
January 10th, 2025, Unceded MST Territory - COPE Vancouver is committed to political independence from the flattery and gifts of business elites. COPE commits to reject gifts such as concert tickets and motorcycle helmets from developers as ‘an incident of the protocol of social obligations that normally accompany the responsibilities of office.’
“Does Concord Pacific give free $300 tickets to Cirque du Soleil to people who are being demovicted on the Broadway corridor? Do they give free tickets to the thousands of people who are sleeping on our streets every night and in every neighbourhood?” said COPE Co-Chair Tanya Webking today, “Or are the gifts just for powerful folks they want to get something from?”
“It’s inappropriate for developers to try to buy favors with gifts. It’s a direct conflict of interest.” Said COPE School Trustee Suzie Mah, “We don’t do business like that. COPE can’t be bought.”
The Coalition of Progressive Electors is Vancouver’s left party since 1968. In 2022, we rejected $3,000 in suspicious donations from Concord Pacific. COPE is always on the side of the people.
