Climate activists endorse COPE’s Fight for Better Public Transit and Climate Action

VANCOUVER, BC – “Fossil fuel lobbyists will no longer be able to operate freely in the shadows of City Hall, because I will hold Ken Sim’s feet to the fire and fight to restore Vancouver as a world leader on climate action,” said COPE City Council by-election candidate Sean Orr.

Sean Orr’s Fight for Vancouver by-election platform includes a host of environmental policy commitments, with a focus on cracking down on Big Oil’s influence on municipal politics, improving public transit, and protecting our city’s parks and greenspace including our democratically-elected Park Board.

Sean Orr’s suite of environmental policies has been endorsed by prominent local climate activists and politicians from a number of parties.

“From fighting for renters to standing up for climate, Sean deserves one of your votes,” said Dr. Devyani Singh, a climate scientist and former Green candidate at the municipal and provincial level.

COPE and Sean Orr’s climate and environment policy commitments include:

  • Working towards expanded and fully-funded fare-free public transit for all, starting with free transit for youth up to 18

  • Fighting the looming cuts to vital public transit routes

  • Pushing for Vancouver to rejoin the lawsuit against Big Oil

  • Establishing a Climate Defence Strategy for the city

  • Putting climate at the core of what we do, creating liveable, accessible and affordable neighbourhoods with child care

  • Protecting the democratically-elected Park Board from Ken Sim’s attempt to abolish it to make it easier for developers to profit off of eliminating vital green spaces

“Ken Sim has spent his time as mayor doing the bidding of billionaire donors and oil and gas lobbyists,” said Harrison Johnston, an activist and climate justice organizer who worked to get the City of Vancouver to declare a climate emergency in 2019 and pass their ambitious Climate Emergency Action Plan in 2020 and 2021.

“I'm supporting Sean Orr because we need someone on Vancouver City Council who is accountable to the community and will fight like hell against Sim’s dangerous agenda,” explained Johnston.

Sean Orr’s climate and environmental policies have also been endorsed by Harold Steves, a former BC NDP MLA who established the Agricultural Land Reserve in the 1970s and went on to serve 45 consecutive years on Richmond City Council: “If you live in Vancouver please remember to vote for Sean Orr in the April 5 byelection. Vancouver is off track and we need Sean Orr.”
