New COPE City Councillor will be officially sworn in Tuesday morning
“Our by-election against Ken Sim’s billionaire-backed candidates shows what’s possible when we fight for Vancouver,” said COPE’s Sean Orr, winner of the April 5th by-election.
Sean will be officially sworn in as a Vancouver City Councillor later today on Tuesday, April 15th.
Sean Orr won 14 of the city’s 25 voting locations, and received votes from over 50% of voters across the city. The two polling stations with the longest election day lines— Britannia and Mount Pleasant Community Centres— each voted 75% for Sean Orr and COPE.
Along with OneCity’s Lucy Maloney, Sean Orr was elected with an overwhelming mandate to challenge the direction of Ken Sim’s City Hall.
Orr will work hard in City Council to hold ABC to account and to demand that Sim act with integrity and reverse course on a number of issues, including:
Ending the cruel ban on supportive housing, and reopening the Renters Office so tenants at risk of demoviction or displacement have adequate support from the City.
Keeping fossil fuel lobbyists away from city policy – and blocking future attempts to allow methane gas in new builds.
Properly funding public services, starting with reversing cuts to library hours.
Standing up against the anti-democratic attempt to abolish the Park Board, and stopping all attempts to undermine the important work of the Integrity Commissioner.
“This isn’t about one person. It’s about us and what we can do together to reimagine Vancouver.” said Orr, “When our neighbours need something, we fight for them – that’s the approach I will bring to City Council from day one.”
